Michiganders are struggling right now. Healthcare costs have skyrocketed. Prices for gas and groceries are reaching new heights. Working families are living paycheck to paycheck and struggling to put food on the table. Lawmakers like Tom Barrett helped create those problems.
Barrett proudly voted yes on the Big BS Bill (H.R. 1) and voted against extending Affordable Care Act subsidies that were helping people afford health insurance. Those votes have driven up costs for all of us and are causing hospitals and clinics to close down due to increased strain on the entire system.
The Big BS Bill also stripped away food assistance and other basic needs programs from people who depend on them. And Trump’s pointless war and reckless, destructive trade policies have made sure that it’s not just healthcare that is getting more expensive. It’s everything.
Republican lawmakers like Barrett say we can’t afford to provide food, housing, and healthcare for the people who live here. At the same time, they pass tax breaks for billionaires and spend our tax dollars on bombing people overseas. That’s money they could have spent on making life better here at home.
And where has Tom Barrett been while we struggle? Absent. He skips town halls and refuses to meet his constituents because he isn’t brave enough to show up and defend his votes. Meanwhile, his Democratic opponent, William Lawrence, has been all over the district—knocking doors, showing up to rallies and events, having honest conversations to the people who live here, and listening to voters’ concerns.
Over the last two years, Tom Barrett has proven he cares more about gaining Trump’s approval than doing right by his constituents. We deserve better.
